Sierra Leone Launches National Integrated Sample Transport System (ISTS) at Connaught Hospital

On July 18, 2025, the Government of Sierra Leone, through the National Public Health Agency (NPHA), officially launched Connaught Hospital as the National Hub for the Integrated Sample Transport System (ISTS). The event, held at the Emergency Operations Center on Wilkinson Road in Freetown, marks a transformative milestone in the country’s efforts to strengthen its healthcare infrastructure. The ISTS is designed to improve disease surveillance, accelerate diagnostic timelines, and ensure the safe and efficient transport of medical specimens across health facilities nationwide. By enhancing laboratory network connectivity, the system will significantly bolster both public health and clinical care responses, particularly in times of outbreak or emergency.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Mohamed Alex Vandi, Director General of the NPHA, emphasized the importance of collaboration among stakeholders to ensure the success of the ISTS. He highlighted that efficient sample transport is not merely a logistical improvement but a life-saving mechanism that plays a critical role in preventing disease outbreaks and improving patient outcomes. The ISTS is expected to revolutionize how specimens are handled, reducing delays and increasing the accuracy and speed of diagnoses, especially in rural and underserved areas.

Dr. Charles Kiyaga, the project consultant, presented an overview of ISTS operations, demonstrating how the system streamlines specimen handling and enhances diagnostic capabilities. He shared success stories from pilot implementations, illustrating how the ISTS has already begun to transform laboratory services and improve healthcare delivery across the country. These examples underscored the system’s potential to support clinical decision-making and strengthen Sierra Leone’s capacity to manage public health emergencies.

The program concluded with the official launch of the ISTS by Dr. Vandi, who reiterated the importance of sustained investment and international collaboration in scaling innovative health solutions. He praised the joint efforts of local healthcare providers and global partners, noting that such partnerships are vital to building a resilient and responsive health system. The ISTS represents a bold stride toward a healthier future for Sierra Leone, where every sample transported is a step closer to saving lives.

As Florence Nightingale once said, “Were there none who were discontented with what they have, the world would never reach anything better.” This quote reflects the spirit behind the ISTS. A commitment to progress, innovation, and the pursuit of better healthcare for all Sierra Leoneans.
