From 21–24 May 2024, the Government of Sierra Leone, in collaboration with the National Public Health Agency and the Ministry of Health, hosted a successful four-day workshop at the New Connection Hotel in Makeni. This pivotal event focused on developing scenarios for measles and anthrax outbreaks, aiming to bolster preparedness and response capabilities to safeguard public health.

The workshop brought together key stakeholders from diverse sectors, including healthcare, agriculture, and emergency response. This comprehensive approach ensured a unified response strategy, addressing all facets of potential outbreaks. Participants included representatives from government bodies, non-governmental organisations, and international partners, all committed to enhancing Sierra Leone's public health security.

A primary objective of the workshop was to improve communication strategies and strengthen surveillance systems. Effective communication is crucial during outbreaks to disseminate information swiftly and accurately. Participants discussed ways to enhance public awareness and ensure timely dissemination of vital information to prevent the spread of diseases.

Strengthening surveillance systems is essential for rapid outbreak detection and response. The workshop emphasised the importance of robust surveillance mechanisms to quickly identify and contain outbreaks, enabling a more effective response to public health threats.

Interactive discussions and hands-on exercises designed to simulate response scenarios for measles and anthrax outbreaks were key features of the workshop. These practical sessions allowed participants to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world situations, fostering collaboration and effective decision-making. Stakeholders practised coordinating responses, managing resources, and implementing control measures, highlighting the importance of intersectoral collaboration.

By the end of the workshop, participants had developed actionable plans to enhance outbreak preparedness and response in Sierra Leone. The collaborative efforts and shared knowledge gained during the four-day event will be instrumental in building a more resilient public health system.

The Government of Sierra Leone remains committed to safeguarding the health of its citizens. Workshops like this are vital steps towards achieving that goal. The National Public Health Agency and the Ministry of Health will continue to work closely with stakeholders to ensure that Sierra Leone is well-prepared to face any public health emergencies.

This workshop underscores Sierra Leone's dedication to strengthening its public health infrastructure and ensuring the safety and well-being of its people. Through continued collaboration and proactive measures, we can effectively mitigate the impact of infectious diseases and protect our communities.
